In Character

So i've decided to take all of the stuff from this thread, and make it into a master list. If you have any more recommendations, feel free to post below, and I will add it to the list. Please note, I'm not alphabetizing this.

Worldbuilding and Roleplaying

Note

I find the lack of RPG podcasts disturbing. We should fix this.

Fiction

  • Limetown (One of the quintessential horror podcasts revolving around a journalist who keeps trying to uncover what happened to a ghost town called LImetown. Sad part is, this won't get updated anytime soon, so don't get to hopeful for new episodes.)
  • TANIS (A podcast about )
  • The Lift (The tales of a young girl leading people into a supernatural house via an elevator to condemn them to their fates whether positive or negative. Imagine Twilight Zone but Rod Serling is a nine year old English girl. I highly recommend this one It's one of my favorites.)
  • The Dark Tome
  • Our Fair City Fun little Post-Apocalypse Story about an underground dystopia... and there are MOLE PEOPLE!!!)
  • The Magnus Archives
  • The Black Tapes(From the people who brought you TANIS and Rabbits, basically it's about a reporter and skeptic investigating into haunted recordings that can't be explained. it's got it's flaws, but I like it just fine)
  • Welcome to Nightvale (This is not a podcast, it's a GODCAST! Basically a news show about the middle of nowhere from Courage the Cowardly dog)
  • The Dark Verse
  • Psuedopod
  • Knifepoint Horror(This is a Horror story podcast without background noises)
  • Alice isn't Dead
  • Archive 81(A young sound engineer is hired to sort through the collected tapes of a reporter looking into the supernatural goings on of an apartment building. Season 1 is excellent! I don't the twist though, and I dropped season 2 after the first episode)
  • Reply All
  • Homecoming
  • Lif–e.af/ter (and to a lesser extent its predecessor, The Message)
  • King Falls AM (gets much better as the series goes on, although it always remains a comedy first and foremost)
  • Rabbits
  • Small Town Horror
  • The Bright Sessions (I love this one. Basically it's the recorded therapy sessions of people with paranormal powers)

Interesting project! Why is the Co-Optional Podcast under Worldbuilding and Roleplaying? I haven't listened in a long while, but don't they just talk about video games and the games industry?

Interesting project! Why is the Co-Optional Podcast under Worldbuilding and Roleplaying? I haven't listened in a long while, but don't they just talk about video games and the games industry?

I struggled over this, and I might revise that list, but for right now, they do cover RPGs so I guess it sort of counts? I'm probably going to add a gaming section. Or better yet, I plan on subdividing all of these, I'm just trying

In the meantime, new podcast to add to the pile. The Bright Sessions. Very interesting narrative podcast about a psychiatrist who deals with people with "Special Needs". Just listen to episode 1.

And then I took the liberty of adding Archive 81. I highly recommend season 1, as it kept me properly terrified throughout the whole thing, however I did not like the ending of season 1, and I'm not to sure about season 2 so far.

I found some pretty interesting stuff. Discovering new horror podcasts has become a miniature hobby of mine.

Other not–already–listed recommendations:

Homecoming
Lif–e.af/ter (and to a lesser extent its predecessor, The Message)
King Falls AM (gets much better as the series goes on, although it always remains a comedy first and foremost)
Rabbits
Small Town Horror

And Limetown gets another, unnecessary recommendation simply because it is so, so good.

Where do you recommend getting started with King Falls AM? Is there an episode with a noticeable jump in quality?

I'd recommend starting at the beginning (if you're interested in the series), as the earlier episodes feature events and elements that are important to the main story arcs and plot-threads.

Thanks working on it. Also is Rabbits by the same people who do TANIS and Black Tapes?

It is. I am finding the content to be good generally. It's more like TANIS than Black Tapes in content, but with less viscerality. Its pace can sometimes become slow. It has potential, but it's no Limetown.

I could tell by the sound design. I'm digging what I'm hearing so far. I actually enjoy internet conspiracy nonsense so this is right up my ally.

All I'll say is that Limetown show they said they were working on better be getting made. And it better be up there with Stranger Things, and other netflix hits.

At least at this point (and imho), Rabbits hasn't really delivered on the "internet conspiracy nonsense" in terms of re-interpreting/including/tweaking the myriad RL urban legends and conspiracies; it seems thus far to solely be about a myth/conspiracy they've created whole-cloth. Originality is okay, for sure, but I saw some missed opportunities since there's a lot of internal conspiracy material to draw from. Regardless, I'm still listening during commutes, mowing, etc.

Eh, I kind of agree. This podcast is kind of slow. I like this one though, so I'm with you.

Hey, nice thread you've got here!  I've been listening to Woodland Secrets and CoolGames inc lately.  I'm not sure they're strictly helpful but I've found them great for idea mining and some systemic knowledge and new perspectives, especially re: gender (mostly the former).

Thank you; this is a helpful list. If more detail (like a sentence) can be given in addition to the recommendations, that would be even better.

Began working on it. However I haven't listened to every single one of these.

Thank you. Would not expect you to writeup the ones you have not listened to.
While the limetown writeup is helpful, and your earlier post introduced me to it months ago! The Lift writeup doesn't inform me of anything w/r/t what it is about.
