Primeval - Clash of Civilizations

Primeval
A large island; primordial beasts, men fending off with them; catastrophes and miracles. It's a good summary.
I have something of a fascination with ancient history. And this is a way for me, in sorts, to quench the
thirst
. So new fluff comes from time to time. I just hope you like it.
Themes
Stone Age
Note
Anything in
italic
is in-setting and thus said in the interlocutor’s currently used language of thought, write or speech.
This world –technology level- will be mostly inspired by the
Chalcolithic
period.
Though,
copper
is not widely used just yet by all peoples, and many use the material primarily to craft objects of arts and meaning.
Spiritualism
People usually hold true to their long standing traditions. They worship seemingly lifeless objects; or converse with spirits; or pray to unseen, but powerful gods; or look into the sky for insight; or meditate under waterfalls for hours, only to name a few. It is often believed that the most zealous ascetics possess powers beyond human comprehension.
The Lands Beyond
Traveling “
beyond
” is an adventure most are afraid of. However, some now have their eyes set on the horizon, or above, and are preparing their long and ambitious journey into the unknown.

*Map made by Kaptn'Lath
The World
The main landmass of this world covers an area of about six hundred thousands (600 000) kilometers square. It’s diverse in ecology and climate, ranging from arid and barren landscapes to lush rainforests.
This island-ish continent has a few features of note, the most prominent being the
Lever Noir
; a constantly active volcano of considerable size right in the middle of the island.
Just north of the voltaic crusts left by the volcano, which have accumulated over centuries, is a river that stretches all the way to the north, ending in the northern sea. Its waters also flow northward. It’s generally called the
Great River
by those who live on its sides.
To the west of this river lies one of the greatest architectural creations of man. A ziggurat so immense and magnificent that first time visitors are almost always stricken with awe. The
Jamibians
, who live in the area, call it the
Stairway to Heaven
.
East of the
Lever Noir
, in the
Jungle Verde
, stands a tree so tall it seems to touch the sky. The tree itself is inhabited, its man-carved holes serving as houses and its branches as bridges between habitations. Its residents have baptized the tree
Gaya
.
To the extreme west, there is a strange crater. It seems to be “walled” by mountains that were once there, but of which now only remains little. Tall trees grow in there, and the canopy hides whatever lives there. People who live near it say it’s a dangerous place. They call it the
Scalebeast Crater
.
Jamibia
The
Great River
has long been a nest for mankind. Though it is extremely difficult to survive on the desolate expanses west and east of the river, men have long kept to the banks and their immediate surroundings, where flora and fauna allows for survival. Once, the civilizations were scattered along the line that the river describes, but one day
Jamibia
rose and united the people, in the process bringing them towards the middle, between the maquis and the river.
The people, who would later commonly be called the Jamibians, were not all united in peace. The ethnicities that lived in the extreme north on the delta that plunges the river into the ocean were taken as slaves, and today continue to be slaves. They’ve contributed hugely to the building of the Stairway to Heaven, the pride of Jamibians. Although riots and rebels rarely ever come up, they do from time to time. Whether constituted of the northern enslaved families or dissident “citizens”, they are almost always ended quickly, most often with great bloodshed. The reigning family, the
Jamibia
, certainly controls the region with an iron fist.
Speaking of the reigning family, citizens and slaves, it’s important to note that the Jamibians do have a sort of hierarchical society. The
Jamibia
reigns over the people of the region, and are aided in their administration by a sort of noble caste, who are extremely loyal to the reigning family. Then there are the citizens, who are basically slaves. They are given ample respect, are fed and sheltered, but their way of life and practices are dictated by the
Jamibia
. Slaves, on the other hand, are whipped, beaten, screamed at and discriminated. Sometimes even by the citizenry. Each year their numbers dwindle, as they die of starvation and maltreatment. Most revolts are led by these people, which usually end in genocidal ways as I said above. Anyone who sympathizes with their cause, whether in the citizenry, in the armed forces, and even among the “nobles” are most often slain on sight, but might be imprisoned, tortured or displayed on the markets for all to witness how treachery against the
Jamibia
ends.
Jungle Verde
A vast verdant jungle, strewn with rivers and ecologically rich and diversified, the region known as the
Jungle Verde
spans miles and miles. It’s surrounded by mountains. Some, like the
Lever Noir
, are monstrously gigantic and pose as obvious borders between the jungle and what lies beyond.
Mankind can prosper here, despite the wide spectrum of dangerosities that make their lair in the territory’s lush greenery and opaque underbrush. Most seem to have concentrated around
Gaya
, a tree so immense it can house thousands of families. Although from a foreigner’s perspective the people might seem peaceful and united, it is far from so. Since as far as they can remember families have been waging wars with rival clans for many reasons, not all of which are apparently logical.
Rain is abundant here, and because of this the flora and fauna is extremely rich. Surviving here is more about knowing what is dangerous, like poisonous ingredients and voracious, aggressive animals (big and small), and knowing how to handle these dangers, whether it be by escaping, hiding or slaying.
The Crust
It is an unforgiving land of unbearable heat and blurry sights. Its ground is layers upon layers of solidified magma, aerial creature droppings and boiling geysers. Even today more layers come to install themselves upon previous ones, slowly, but surely adding to the height of this plateau that is already impressive in height.
Mankind does not live there, nor should it. Strange beasts, mostly aerial, make their nest in this hellish land. Adventuring there is foolish, especially since the ever-active
Lever Noir
imposes its towering self right in the middle, continually spitting its infernal fluids all over the place.
Wisparia
Mankind has only arrived in this place a few decades ago, but they were the most innovative and spiritually enlightened. This gigantic island, southeast of the main landmass, had a natural wealth equaling places like the Jungle Verde. -It had-, because all has been razed. It’s now mostly barren. The forests and plains of high grass that blessed the island are gone, and left only dirt and rock behind.
What happened is madness destroyed the land. It caused a cataclysm so great that nothing was left behind to tell the tale, or so the world thought…
In reality, it had somewhat been arranged, though the end result varied the actual wanted result, if only a bit. Some achieved their goal nonetheless, but at what cost?
The Wailing Marshes
Hidden by mountains and almost entirely covered with fog, this swampy region has been forgotten by men, or by most of them, at least. Its damp forests are soaked in water and traversed by the
Allway Bayou
, a long river with countless “branches” that vein the entire territory, which looks like a leaf when seen from high above.
Those who live on the other side of its northern borders claim that abominations live in this hidden land. Stories of gutless, eyeless, headless men and animals are abundant, and their wailing is ever present in these tales, hence the naming of the place the
Wailing Marshes
.
This eerie place is not easily accessible, and the atrocities it seems to house make people think twice about adventuring on its grounds. Most prefer to keep to the waterways, but even its waters are tainted by the foul stench of evil.
Shekayah Mountains
Overseeing the
Bay of Serenity
and the eastern Sea, as well as the
Manugayatru
that walls the
Jungle Verde
, the Shekayah Mountains lies in the mountainous peninsula on the northeastern part of the continent. It is a very wild environment, with bears, felines, parrots and other exotic animals making the most of the region inhabitants. Though, long ago men established small communities and have since thrived in this otherwise dangerous place. These men are those we call the
Shekayahs
. They keep to themselves and follow strange long-standing traditions.
Recently, there has been rumors spreading in neighbor communities that these peaceful and ascetic men have made a mysterious discovery, one that involves the mind and spirit rather than anything material. One called
Mantra
.

Bestiary
Primeval is not all about humans, although I seem to make this point at times. Here I will put a few brief descriptions (and perhaps further detail them in the future) of these monsters that lurk in the dark places of this world.
The Moaner
This creature is humanoid in appearance, and would seem like a lazy man from afar, walking slowly and in a sloppy manner, though from up close one would call this thing an abomination. Its skin, or the parts that remain attached to its body, is pale. Some of the organs are missing, or in a decomposed state.
They don’t seem to be intelligent, and are often seen walking right into obstacles and tripping on obvious logs. Sometimes they fall right into water bodies, face down and seemingly incapable of swimming. Their outstretched movements cause them many misfortunes.
Although they do possess a kind of weird language, they don’t seem to communicate between themselves. The only sound they seem capable of emitting is a guttural moaning that comes from the throat. Those who don’t possess a throat don’t seem to be able to make any sound.
Ashbark
Around the periphery of the
Crust
, especially to the south on the
Jungle Verde
border, exists a rare breed of tree. These trees actually weren’t always as such. They became what they are, rather than being born as they are.
Burned, these trees are piles of ashes, glowing fiery red as they are caressed by the wind. They feel as though alive, animated by some strange, primal energy. Yes, animated, but not quick and witty. Just like their more ordinary peers they stand idle, but when living bodies that irradiate a lot of heat comes near them, they seem to want to fall on them, and eventually do, inflicting painful burns upon their victims as well as filling their mouth and nose with ashes, causing suffocation.
One can make them out easily. They are light gray, like the ashes of a burnt log, and have no canopy. It is said that men who succumb to this tree’s deadly attack will be reborn as
Ashbark
themselves.
Arachnokos
Of a translucent, very light white, these tiny spiders are incredibly vicious. Their quasi-transparency and negligible size makes them extremely difficult to spot, and their bite releases a deadly toxin that is enough to kill a horse.
The insect is said to have come from
Wisparia
, though it is unknown how for they seem to keep away from water. The most popular hypothesis among those who have seen them, and
Whisperers
, is that the latter might have brought them to the mainland.
Their preferred habitat is dense forests, which adds to their being difficult to sight.

New Discovery:
Mantra
Mantra
is a mysterious thing. It’s the inner strength all humans posses but don’t know about. Far greater is the wisdom of these ascetics who learned how to tap into this source.
Masters of this art have been incredibly hesitant to reveal any secrets. And so the capabilities of this new –thing- remain unclear. Though, there is widespread belief that
Mantra
confers its user with god-like powers.
Chakra
To be blessed with the power of
Mantra
, one has to unlock different
Chakras
. These
Chakras
are vortexes of energy in and on the human body. The location of these vortexes may differ from one another.
Chakras
themselves, when mastered, grant their user mystical powers, although not as long lasting and powerful as
Mantras
.
Catastrophes
Catastrophes
are commonly believed to be envoys of some greater power.
He who watches
delivers his messages in dreadful ways, and they are received with utmost caution, for their power supposedly bears meaning.
Their form vary, sometimes taking the form of a huge tidal wave flooding lands entire; or moving earth that causes major quakes; or spitting mountains whose unstoppable flows of unbearable heat propagate in all directions, threatening all life that lays in its way. At times they look like humanoids of fire, ice or mud. And sometimes they take under more mundane forms, like the miniature tornadoes whose strength cannot lift more than a few dried leaves. But they have meaning, or so they say…
Understanding Catastrophes
They are, in fact, what many other campaign settings would describe as Elementals. They are dormant entities that, when provoked, will rise and unleash their chaotic and unfathomable powers upon the world, decimating entire races at times. These “energies” have a proper parent element.
Here’s an example (Beware, this isn’t necessarily –true lore-); Men on the southwestern coast of the main landmass have been fishing a rare specimen for years, no, decades. One day, a tsunami came unannounced and flooded the entire region, changing the land into a humid swamp forever. The tidal wave was thought to be god’s will, though the survivors don’t know exactly what his message was, and are still seeking answers.
Spirits, Ghosts and Whisperers
It is not uncommon for people to seek answers from unseen entities, or long dead ancestors. Sometimes, in somewhat unexpected situations, those who have prayed are given answers, mostly through visions; swift appearances of translucent men and women who embodies the entity to whom their prayers were dedicated.
But these spirits have distant cousins, in a way.
Ghosts
are just like
Spirits
in appearance, albeit sometimes creepier looking, but they are of vile intent; seeking to sow despair and bring harm upon their oblivious victims. Aside from what it will say, and what it will do, a spirit (or ghost) is extremely hard to “categorize”. Most often, only time can tell.
Somewhat recently, another kind of spirit has made an appearance, called by those who have seen it the
Whisperers
. They are as translucent as ghosts, but glow slightly; a glow that varies in color.
Their name comes from the way they communicate. Their words are whispered, and echo several times as if uttered in an endless void.
It’s very hard to make out what they say if they speak long sentences, because the echoes climb on one another, and the whisper becomes difficult to understand. This has made them somewhat cold and direct, and sometimes incredibly mysterious.

Conflicts & Lore
The Frontier Wars
For long the
God-King Jamibia
attempted to penetrate the grassland of the west, and reach for the
Heaven Stream
. The river, believed to purify the soul of his people, has caught his attention.
Though he enjoyed a loyal army, and a great number of slaves, he could never muster the necessary resources to crush the resistance of the
indigenes
. They were fierce combatants and an ingenious bunch. With very primitive means, they would set up traps and fight a guerilla war with much precision.
For a time his interest in these territories waned, as he fought with violent beasts from the
Lever Noir
, conquered eastern lands and attempted to contain the riots of their northern slaves.
As he firmly takes control of the conquered eastern lands, many usher rumors about a flame rekindled; the sparkle in his eyes as he dreams of basking in the waters of this divine river.
Be advised, the following contains content suitable to mature audiences only
Jamibia, the God-King
Born to parents of the Yamiya tribe, the early life of Jamibia was one of many hardships and escapes. The Yamiya tribe was chased by the Logosu of the north, which made them slaves upon capture or simply ate them. He and his parents fled towards the west and eventually reached a waterway that would one day be named the
Heaven Stream
. Life was good, generally speaking. Local tribes had made no threat against their person.
It was his wish that one day, they return to his place of birth. And they did so, but even their vigilance was not enough that time to keep the Logosu from capturing them. They were brought to
Regesh
, a small village on the northern coast.
One day, an envoy of the chief of the Logosu arrived in the village to discuss business with the local officials. As he wrapped up for the day, his gaze landed on Jamibia's mother and he did something unforgiving. His father tried to intervene, but was intercepted and immediately executed. When Jamibia heard of this, he went mad and attempted to slay the envoy. He failed, and his mother was given a deadly beating. The officials imprisoned him for around a year. His hatred of the Logosu grew exponentially each days of his imprisonment.
He had made a friend among the slaves. The man was Ruobingo, the slave messenger who carried messages to and from officials. It is not clear why or when, but Ruobingo was eventually persuaded to free Jamibia at night.
On the night of his illicit release, he went with his friend to free hundreds of slaves. Officials of the village were quickly overrun (most killed in their sleep) and the freed slaves finally decided on rebuilding their lives on the
Maquis of Heaven
, so named because it was the place of birth of Jamibia, the savior of the People.
But the former slaves quickly realized that the Logosu would return to take revenge, and meant to mount an offensive. They knew they were outnumbered and that the enemy was now preparing for the possibility of an invasion. Ruobingo, a member of the Bagas tribe, suggested to Jamibia that they persuade his tribal chief to join them in their endeavour against the Logosu.
So they did. The Bagas were eager to make war to the Logosu, for they had lost many members of their tribes to these vile slavers. An offensive was planned and the war to free the region of the Logosu was but a few days away.
They quickly put their plan to execution, and Jamibia was finally able to take a shot at the Logosu tribal chief, Lugo. Lugo admitted defeat and Jamibia quickly proceeded to crucifying him. He then ordered all the captured Logosu, which numbered in the thousands, to whip or punch their leader once with all their might. The entire tribe did so, even though it was clear that after the first few hundreds the chief was already dead. The humiliation and atrocity the Logosu had just endured was not enough in Jamibia's mind, and he then proceeded to do something horrible, that everyone would remember until the end of times.
He lined up all men and placed their children in front of them, while keeping the women prisoner and at bay. He ordered the fathers to end the life of their own children, which they did (those that didn't were swiftly put to death, by beheading, along with their child), and were then executed by beheading or beating (it was at the executioner's convenience). The atrocity was too much for many to bear, and further executions even took place among those on Jamibia's side. A pile of corpses is made of the slaughtered bodies and Jamibia proclaims that it is not to be touched, ever. He names it the Logosu Erection.
The captured women will be used continually over the course of their lives. As Jamibia envisions it, they will produce a generations of slaves for the workforce. For this purpose, the Jamibians will go to great lengths to keep these women alive and procreating. They will eventually be named the
Slavebearers
.
At the same time, and very shortly after the fall of the Logosu tribe, Jamibia incontestably proclaims himself God-King of Jamibia. Since he sees the world as part of Jamibia, his supposedly divine being, his philosophy is that he rules all. There is an exception, however, to his rule. For his divinity comes from the sky, and he goes to great lengths to prove that even his superiority is weak against the
Heavens
.
Shortly after his declaration, he orders the construction of
Maga Jamibia
(or the City of Jamibia) which is partly done a few years after. In the meantime, he took to assembling an army and providing them with basic weapons. He remembered the purity, even divinity of the western stream. He sent off his army to capture all the western lands up to the
Heaven Stream
. Unfortunately, the defenders were unusually well prepared for an invasion of great magnitude and fought off the invaders with ferocity. Jamibia decided to retreat his forces from the west and go eastward instead, to conquer the provoking apemen that inhabited the eastern bank of the
Great River
and the savannahs further to the east.
Maybe not obviously, but it was somewhat to be expected, he achieved a quick victory over these eastern people, subjugating them to his rule. But he was soon assailed by another threat. Gigantic, strange creatures were coming from the
Crust
with their small, but terrifying demonic armies. For about two months Jamibia's forces will be busy repelling the invasion, which they do with success.
Obviously the inevitable happened. While the bulk of Jamibia's forces was busy with unknown creatures down south, the Logosu slaves revolted up north, and so did the unstable tribes of the east. When the battle south of
Maga Jamibia
was over, the God-King quelled the uprisings and reinforced his political power in these areas.
The noble families, those who most loyally walked at Jamibia's side during all his hardships, proposed that a structure of great magnitude be edified in his name and glory. Jamibia proceeded to sponsor the construction of the
Stairway to Heaven
, a massive ziggurat.
This edifice was a pillar in Jamibia's plan to impose his religious beliefs among the people, even slaves. All that was left was the
Heaven Stream
, and his mind fickles again with the exciting though of bathing in its pure waters.
The Cataclysm - The Story of Wisparia and the Whisperers
With their deep echoing voices, the
Whisperers
slowly tell the tale of their people and how they transcended humanity to become immortal spirits. Some call their state unfortunate, while others rejoice, seeing in their new form a means to a greater range of possibilities.
Their people was well versed in the art of
Communing
, which is; communicating with spirits. It didn't take long for their people to assemble all their knowledge and form one big community that spanned the whole island. Their society was prosper, and their knowledge of the art ever increasing.
As is the case with all human societies, or so they say, greed and pride slowly took over. The scourge that they were corrupted the
Tribal Assembly
, an institution they had put together to unite the people of
Kipraetas
(The name they had given the island, now called
Wisparia
by the people on the mainland). Where they once stood united on all fronts, small factions were now beginning to surface. Some wanting this, or that. The notion of compromise and tolerance the people had been capable of was dying.
One faction in particular, led by
Tiatronos Ex Kipraetas
(The Great; the title is hereditary), demanded that all rituals and ceremonies of the
Tribal Assembly
be presided and conducted by them. It had always been a turn based honour, and some were, understandably, reluctant to let them have their way. Although
Tiatronos
was the descendant of the primary instigator of the unification of the people, many tribes rallied to his ancestor's cause solely because they thought they could all live peacefully, as equals... How foolish they had been.
The matter was discussed times and times again over the span of an entire year. The other factions had to give
Tiatronos
that much; he was patient. But not without limits. Eventually he formed a coalition of tribes and declared that all that would oppose his claim as the legitimate ruler of
Kipraetas
and its people would be deemed as traitors and chased until their deaths. War broke out between the factions, but the result was to be foreseen.
Tiatronos
was successful in swiftly concluding the war. He subjugated his enemies to his rule using a powerfully enhanced army and put their leaders to death.
A triumph ceremony in honour to
Tiatronos
was held upon his return home. This is when things started getting ugly. The man had an ambitious plan. He would execute a ritual that would garner the strength of all the slain forces. Many observers agreed that the task was probably impossible and could have a devastating blow-back. For some reason, he went on unobstructed. Suddenly, all was silent, followed shortly thereafter by a quick flash of blinding blue light, and then nothing...
When only a small portion of the whole crowd regained consciousness, everything was different than it had been. The grass, the trees, the rivers and the flowers... all gone. But the most notable change was them. They had become like spirits.
It wasn't about factions anymore, it was about mourning their people, their culture and their past lives. Obviously,
Tiatronos
, still of this world, was blamed for this and was smitten by some of his ex-allies.
The
Kipraetians
sought, and still seek to forge a new identity, or to retrieve their former.

Primeval has been on hiatus for about a year now, but I've recently had some inspiration for it. It was one of my first projects, and I think it has potential. So I will be working on it again and hopefully make it into something cool and somewhat authentic.
And yeah, there should be more coming in the near future.

Awesome map. So you've got a shield volcano? Is it a typical one or a pyroclastic one? Also (not mentioned), it looks like you quite a large river system in th east; is that like an amazon/oronoco flow type thing? Can we expect a rain forest there? What do the natives say about the island to the southeast?

Answer to Humabout's questions
Interesting questions, here are some answers.
On the volcano question, I would say it's a cross between typical and shield volcano. It's typical, though it erupts huge amounts of fluid lava, like shield volcanoes, that solidify and form pyroclastic rock. In fact, reaching the
Lever Noir
is nearly impossible, and getting there means climbing to the plateaus that its flows created over the centuries.
Yes, where there is a lake and a network of rivers going three ways is a jungle (the
Jungle Verde
). A tropical rainforest you could say. The rivers, I guess, could be compared in some ways to both of those you mentioned, but their configuration isn't the exact same obviously. Also, at first glance it's hard to tell, but you can see the
Gaya
tree on the western banks of the lake.
Information on the southern island is coming, and I think it's going to interest you very much. I won't spoil anything for the moment.
And yeah, the map is pretty cool, thanks to Kapt'n'Lath.

How old is the ziggurat? If it's really huge, it must have been built by a rather advanced (for the era) and wealthy civilization - one that'd been around a lengthy time before the construction even begun. Assuming there were no supernatural forces involved, of corse.

Answer to Ghostman's question
Good question Ghostman.
Construction of the main structure has been finished for about half a century now, and finished is a strong word. Everyday, skilled workers and slaves beautify the structure; by carving symbols and drawings into the sun-died mud-bricks, or applying colourful dyes on the glyphs, or by carefully placing altars and artifacts in the complex, and expanding it.
Construction on this -monument- was started about twelve decades ago, when
Jamibi
unified the
Jamibians
. In truth, a stunning majority of the workers were slaves. But few slaves are left on the main structure now. They are mostly busy expanding the structure by building temples around the site.
Edit: Also, there isn't nearly as many slaves as there were at the peak of the main structure's construction. Most have gone to other tasks throughout the past years or died. It's possible some rose to what could be considered "
respectful citizens
".

I really like this feel. I have always wanted to play in a setting where civilization was just beginning to get off the ground. I am also eager to see more posted.

@Humabout: I meant to write something on this yesterday, but was in a hurry and left. Though I did give it some thoughts and I think I don't really have to mention much about it. It's sort of a... theme. See my
Imperialism
section to give yourself an idea. Besides, alot of the information I will be dropping here will end up answering your question.
Thanks Horse, I should be making available more stuff in the coming days.
